Cloud Dance was formed in January 2007, and until its dissolution in May 2009, it worked with 14 choreographers, offered residencies to 11 dance students, and provided a landing board for dancers newly-arrived in London, recent graduates, and dancers either in full-time employment or returning to dance.
Our repertoire consisted of a mix of in-house and external choreographers: this was intended to provide all of the dancers with the opportunity to sample a variety of styles and choreographers, whilst enabling some of the dancers to pursue their choreographic ideas and interests.
Schemes which we operated included residencies for dance students, work experience for new graduates, performance opportunities for dance students and emerging dance companies through Cloud Dance Festival, working with emerging choreographers and full-time professional dancers, subsidised professional class for our dancers, dance classes outside of term time, and basically whatever else the dancers suggested or wanted to do.
In July 2008, we decided to restructure the company to focus on the quality of its work, and to better showcase the work of its dancers. To achieve this, we significantly reduced the number of dancers and sought more experienced choreographers for them to work with. Unfortunately, the company would only be viable in this format with external funding, and we concluded in April 2009 that we would not be able to achieve the necessary funding to continue.
We thank everyone for their support over the years, and hope to see you at the next Cloud Dance Festival!
